Yuubari was a one-of-a-kind experimental light cruiser designed by the legendary naval architect Yuzuru Hiraga. Her pioneering compact design packed the armament of a 5,500-ton cruiser into a hull of only 2,890 tons, an achievement that influenced subsequent Japanese cruiser design. Built at Sasebo Naval Arsenal, she was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Bluegill off Sonsorol, southwest of Palau, on 27 April 1944 and sank the next day.

History

Yuubari (夕張) was an experimental light cruiser of the Imperial Japanese Navy, the sole ship of her class. Designed by the brilliant naval architect Captain Yuzuru Hiraga, she was laid down at Sasebo Naval Arsenal on 5 June 1922, launched on 5 March 1923, and commissioned on 31 July 1923.

Yuubari represented a revolutionary approach to warship design. Hiraga's challenge was to fit the armament equivalent of the 5,500-ton Kuma-class light cruisers (six 14 cm guns and four torpedo tubes) into a hull displacing only about 2,890 tons. He achieved this through innovative structural engineering, including the use of the hull itself as part of the armor scheme and pioneering weight-saving techniques throughout the ship.

The design principles proven on Yuubari — compact hull, integrated armor, and efficient weight distribution — were carried forward into subsequent Japanese cruiser designs, beginning with the Furutaka-class heavy cruisers. She is thus regarded as a landmark in Japanese naval architecture.

During World War II, Yuubari served in various operations including the Wake Island invasion and the Battle of the Coral Sea. As the war progressed, she was employed in convoy escort and patrol duties.

On 27 April 1944, just after landing troops at Sonsorol Island, southwest of Palau, Yuubari was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Bluegill (SS-242). Hit by one torpedo, she suffered progressive flooding and sank the next morning, 28 April, near Sonsorol, with the loss of 19 crew members.
