History

Ooshio was an Asashio-class destroyer built at Maizuru Naval Arsenal, laid down 5 August 1936, launched 19 April 1937, and commissioned 31 October 1937. She shared the same specifications as the lead ship: approximately 2,370 tons displacement, six 127mm guns, and eight Long Lance torpedo tubes.

Ooshio participated in operations across the Dutch East Indies, including the Battle of Badung Strait on 19 February 1942, fought off Bali while she was escorting the transport Sasago Maru. She is credited with helping to sink the Dutch destroyer HNLMS Piet Hein with a torpedo and with damaging other Allied ships by gunfire, but was herself moderately damaged, with seven of her crew killed. She subsequently served in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea campaigns.

On 20 February 1943, while operating about 70 nautical miles from Manus Island in the Admiralty Islands, Ooshio was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Albacore (SS-218). Eight crewmen were killed. Her sister ship Arashio took her in tow, but her keel had been fatally damaged and she broke up and sank. She was removed from the navy list on 1 April 1943.

Her loss predated the destruction of sisters Asashio and Arashio by only twelve days at the Battle of the Bismarck Sea — marking a catastrophic period for the class within a short span of time.
