History

The Kwantung Army (関東軍, Kantō-gun) was the most powerful and politically influential field army of the Imperial Japanese Army, stationed in the Kwantung Leased Territory and Manchuria from 1919 to 1945. Its headquarters moved to Changchun (renamed Hsinking, 新京) in 1932 following the establishment of the puppet state of Manchukuo.

The Kwantung Army was notorious for acting independently of Tokyo. Its officers engineered the Manchurian Incident (September 18, 1931) — the bombing of the South Manchuria Railway at Mukden — as a pretext for the invasion and occupation of all Manchuria, presenting the government with a fait accompli. The army established Manchukuo as a puppet state under Emperor Puyi and effectively controlled all civil and military affairs in the region. It also secretly developed biological and chemical weapons programs, most infamously Unit 731 under Shirō Ishii, which conducted lethal human experimentation on prisoners.

At its peak in 1941, the Kwantung Army comprised approximately 700,000 troops and was considered the elite of the IJA. However, from 1943 onward, its best divisions were stripped away and sent to the Pacific and Southeast Asian theaters, leaving behind a hollow force of poorly trained replacements. When the Soviet Union declared war on Japan on August 8, 1945, and launched Operation August Storm, the Kwantung Army was overwhelmed within days. Approximately 600,000 Japanese soldiers were taken prisoner and deported to Soviet labor camps in Siberia, where tens of thousands perished.
