Former Taishoya Kimono Store and Fuel Hall (Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park Rest House)
旧大正屋呉服店・燃料会館(広島市平和記念公園レストハウス)
The former Taishoya store became a wartime fuel-rationing office and survived the Hiroshima atomic bombing as a damaged shell. Its basement and exhibitions now convey the building's history and the life of the former Nakajima district.
History
Beside Motoyasu Bridge, the Peace Memorial Park Rest House occupies the former Taishoya kimono store, built in 1929. The shop closed under wartime textile controls; in 1944 a prefectural fuel-rationing organization acquired the building. It was known as the Fuel Hall when the atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945.
Only about 170 metres from the hypocenter, the building suffered severe roof damage and fire throughout its above-ground interior. Its basic structure and basement survived. Eizo Nomura had gone downstairs for documents and survived; the other people working in the building that morning subsequently died. The basement exhibition introduces his experience in the space connected with it.
After wartime and reconstruction uses, the building became a visitor rest house. A major renovation reopened it in 2020 with an appearance closer to its original design. This is a preserved and altered building, not an untouched 1945 interior. New flooring improves access in the basement while part of the original floor remains visible. Upstairs, displays recall the shops and residents of the Nakajima district that occupied today's park. Tourist information and rest facilities operate in the same building. The approximate map marker uses the prefectural tourism body's location for the Rest House; it denotes this individual building rather than the whole Peace Memorial Park.
