History

Mugonkan in Ueda is a memorial art museum devoted to students whose creative lives ended in the Sino-Japanese and Pacific wars. It opened in 1997. Its buildings are postwar places of remembrance rather than the students' wartime studios or military stations.

Portraits of relatives and loved ones, together with scenes of home, introduce the artists through the lives they hoped to continue. Letters, sketchbooks, palettes, notebooks and photographs displayed with the paintings connect individual works to their makers. Seen together, these objects make the loss of a creative future tangible alongside the loss of life.

The neighbouring second gallery, the Dome of Torn Canvases, opened in 2008 to display further works and includes the Olive Reading Room. Both galleries are treated here as one memorial site rather than separate map entries.

The museum admits the public with a combined ticket for the main and second galleries. Tuesday is normally the closing day, with holiday exceptions. Visitors can walk from Shiodamachi Station or take a local bus to Mugonkan-iriguchi and continue on foot. The museum asks visitors with accessibility requirements to contact it. The approximate map point follows the main museum location embedded on its official website; it does not describe the full grounds.
