Namura Osaka Shipyard Remains (Creative Center Osaka)
名村造船所大阪工場跡地(クリエイティブセンター大阪)
A former shipyard on the Kizu River that built wartime standard merchant ships. Its surviving industrial spaces now host Creative Center Osaka; access is through scheduled tours or events, with no ordinary free entry.
History
Namura acquired the former Murao shipyard facilities in 1931 and established its Osaka works beside the Kizu River in Kitakagaya. The location belongs to the city's riverfront shipbuilding landscape, where construction and repair yards formed an important industrial district.
The works participated in wartime merchant-ship production. Contemporary construction-performance reports catalogued by the University of Tokyo identify Namura among the builders of D-type and modified D-type ships. These were part of the wartime shipping programme: the site's significance extends beyond combat vessels to the industrial effort supporting transport at sea. The company describes its 1931–1945 history as a period shaped by wartime controls.
After postwar production and the development of the Imari yard, Namura sold the Osaka works' equipment in 1979. The site later found a different use: Creative Center Osaka opened as an arts space in 2004, and the former works received recognition as a Modernization Industrial Heritage site in 2007. Surviving features include a ship-repair dock and a room used for full-size ship drawings. Such spaces reveal how shipbuilding involved design and maintenance as well as launching hulls, although individual surviving structures have not all been dated to the war.
The grounds are privately managed. The operator does not ordinarily admit casual sightseeing visitors and directs them to its scheduled tours; events have their own access arrangements. The approximate map point is taken from the operator's access-map centre and represents the present arts venue within the former yard, rather than the complete historical factory boundary.
