Kyoto Museum for World Peace, Ritsumeikan University

Opened in 1992, Ritsumeikan University's Kyoto Museum for World Peace is a postwar institution open to the wider public. It preserves and interprets memories of war; its present building is not a surviving military headquarters or base.

Following a 2023 renewal, the permanent exhibition is concentrated on the basement level. A chronological display is combined with themes addressing imperial Japan's colonies and occupied territories, harm inflicted and suffered during the Fifteen-Year War, and efforts to restore victims' dignity. Further displays connect these histories with human security and international peace. The result offers a way to consider the Second World War through people's experiences and relationships across Asia as well as through political events.

The first floor includes Mugonkan's Kyoto gallery, displaying works and belongings of fallen art students, especially those connected with the Kansai region. It is included in this museum entry, while Mugonkan in Ueda remains a geographically separate museum. A media library and Peace Commons on the second floor support further reading and discussion.

General admission follows the museum's published calendar. Sundays and days after national holidays are normally closed, with exceptions and university holiday closures. Visitors are asked to use public transport; the museum is within walking distance of the Ritsumeikan Daigaku-mae stop. The map marks an approximate representative point for the present museum.
