History

IJN Mutsu was the second Nagato-class battleship, built at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal. She mounted eight 41cm guns, making her one of the most powerful battleships when commissioned. On June 8, 1943, while anchored at Hashirajima in the Seto Inland Sea, a catastrophic explosion ripped through her No. 3 turret magazine, breaking the ship in two. She sank rapidly, killing 1,121 of her crew. The cause was never definitively determined.
