History

The 20th Infantry Regiment moved from Osaka to Fukuchiyama in 1898. Its former compound is now an active Ground Self-Defense Force camp southwest of the city centre. The 120th Infantry Regiment was also formed here in 1938, making the site part of the region's wartime army mobilization network.

The camp museum occupies the officers' assembly building constructed when the regiment arrived. Converted into a museum in 1966, it received substantial repairs in 2005 and the name Kakishoshukan. Its displays include uniforms, regimental objects and accounts of the 20th Regiment's fighting in the Philippines, including Bataan and the destruction of the unit on Leyte. Material on the 120th Regiment, local history and the Self-Defense Forces places the surviving building in a broader chronology.

After Japan's defeat, the compound served as a railway training establishment from 1945 to 1950. The National Police Reserve then occupied it; subsequent reorganizations led to the present Self-Defense Force camp. A monument to the 20th Regiment, erected in 1966, marks the earlier garrison. The camp also preserves a marker for its former military shrine, which was moved to nearby Ichinomiya Shrine at the end of the war.

This is a restricted military site. The museum's official instructions require telephone booking one month in advance; it closes on weekends and public holidays, and visits may be declined because of training or emergency duties. Arrangements and entry procedures must be confirmed with the public affairs office. The map marks the camp's representative location from its official access map, not a freely accessible museum entrance.
