Hisai Army Barracks and Former 30th Infantry Brigade Headquarters
久居陸軍兵営跡・旧歩兵第三十旅団司令部(久居駐屯地)
Camp Hisai occupies the former Imperial Army barracks established in 1908. Its surviving 30th Infantry Brigade headquarters now houses a museum of the units stationed here; visits to this active military camp require advance arrangements.
History
The army barracks at Hisai were completed in 1908, following local efforts to bring a garrison to Mie Prefecture. The 30th Infantry Brigade headquarters was established here that November, and the 51st Infantry Regiment arrived after service in Korea. The 33rd Regiment later transferred from Moriyama. The camp also saw the formation of the 133rd Regiment in 1938 and the 151st in 1941, linking the site directly to Japan's wartime mobilization.
The most distinctive surviving building is the former brigade headquarters, built in 1908 and used through the end of the war in August 1945. Its entrance originally stood separately from the main barracks gate. The building became the camp museum in 1966; original exterior boards and roof ornaments shaped like rifle front sights remain. Its collections cover the brigade and several infantry regiments associated with Hisai.
After the war, former army property accommodated schools, businesses and repatriates, while training land was lent for cultivation. The present military camp opened in 1952. Today the museum stands within an active Ground Self-Defense Force installation, so its existence does not mean unrestricted admission.
For a camp or museum visit, contact the public affairs office approximately one month ahead and complete the required paperwork. Training or disaster-response duties can prevent or cancel a visit. The map uses Mie Prefecture's published museum coordinate as a representative point within the former barracks, not as an independently accessible entrance.
