History

The Kure Naval Arsenal was one of the largest and most important shipbuilding and naval repair facilities in Japan. Established in 1889, it became a full naval arsenal in 1903. During World War II, Kure built the super-battleship Yamato, the largest battleship ever constructed. The arsenal also produced aircraft carriers, submarines, and naval ordnance. It was heavily bombed in 1945 and dismantled during the occupation. Today, the Yamato Museum in Kure commemorates the site's history.
