History

The Mitsubishi Nagasaki Shipyard was one of Japan's most important shipbuilding facilities. During World War II, it built the super-battleship Musashi (sister ship of Yamato), aircraft carriers, cruisers, and destroyers. The shipyard was a key target of Allied bombing. Despite its proximity to the Nagasaki atomic bomb hypocenter, the shipyard survived with significant damage and was rebuilt after the war. It continues to operate today as part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
