Mitsui Tamano Shipyard (Former Tama Shipyard)
三井造船玉野造船所(旧玉造船所)
A shipbuilding centre founded in 1917 that produced naval vessels and wartime standard merchant ships. Parts of the waterfront remain in industrial use, including modern shipbuilding; unrestricted public entry is not established.
History
Mitsui began shipbuilding at Tama, now part of Tamano, in 1917. The operation became the independent Tama Shipyard company in 1937 and adopted the Mitsui Shipbuilding name in 1942. Its waterfront connected ship construction with marine-engine production and other industrial work.
During the Second World War, Tamano built naval vessels and standard merchant ships. The University of Tokyo's wartime shipping archive catalogue identifies the yard in contemporary construction-performance surveys for modified A-type ships. This places Tamano within the wartime effort to supply both military vessels and the transport capacity on which the war depended.
Production also drew on mobilized labour. The government's account of wartime Tamano records women and students being assigned to local munitions plants, including Mitsui, and Korean workers brought to the shipyard under wartime coercion. The industrial history therefore includes the experiences of people whose labour sustained production, alongside the vessels and machinery they made.
Shipbuilding continued after 1945. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Maritime Systems took over the naval and government-vessel business in 2021, while Mitsui E&S and related companies maintain other activities in the wider industrial grounds. Present structures should not automatically be regarded as wartime survivals. This is an operating industrial site; ordinary public admission has not been confirmed. The approximate map point comes from a current company's official access link within the Tamano grounds and represents only part of the historical works, not a specific wartime berth or a visitor entrance.
