Tagajo Naval Arsenal Site (Tagajo Garrison Area)
多賀城海軍工廠跡(多賀城駐屯地周辺)
A wartime naval factory for aircraft machine guns and ammunition transformed southeastern Tagajo. Part of its buildings and protective earthworks survives within an active garrison; the wider site has become industrial and other developed land.
History
Tagajo Naval Arsenal was created during the Pacific War to produce aircraft machine guns and their ammunition. Construction began on 1 July 1942, and the arsenal formally opened on 1 October 1943. Its extensive grounds in the southeastern part of the village included Hachiman, Kasagami and Oshiro. Although its products included weapons carried by aircraft, this was an armaments and ammunition establishment rather than an aircraft assembly plant or shipyard.
Acquiring the land transformed local life. Families within the planned grounds had to relocate, along with homes and even graves. Municipal research into surviving rural storehouses has identified examples moved out of the arsenal area. These displaced domestic buildings preserve another aspect of the factory's history: the wartime military landscape was created by removing an earlier community, not simply by building on empty land.
After Japan's defeat, the site came under U.S. management. Later reuse divided the former industrial estate between factories and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force's Tagajo Garrison. The city's historical account confirms that some arsenal buildings and protective earthworks remain inside the garrison. This does not mean that the entire wartime factory survives, or that every surviving structure has been converted into a visitor attraction.
The approximate marker represents the present garrison, whose address is Maruyama 2-1-1, rather than an individual wartime workshop or the full arsenal boundary. It is an active military installation with controlled access. Public admission has been offered for announced anniversary events, but those events do not establish routine entry or guarantee access to particular historic remains. Visitors interested in the factory landscape should distinguish publicly accessible surrounding roads from military and private industrial property.
