History

The low-lying eastern wards of Tokyo (Sumida, Koto, and surrounding areas) were the primary target of Operation Meetinghouse on the night of March 9-10, 1945. Over 300 B-29 bombers dropped incendiary bombs, creating a firestorm that killed approximately 100,000 people in a single night—making it the deadliest air raid in human history. The Center for the Tokyo Raids and War Damage, along with various memorials in the area, commemorates the victims.
