18th Infantry Regiment Barracks Site (Toyohashi Park)
歩兵第十八連隊兵営跡(豊橋公園)
The former Yoshida Castle grounds housed the 18th Infantry Regiment from 1885 until the end of the Pacific War. Gates, a sentry post and other military remains survive in today's public Toyohashi Park.
History
Toyohashi Park occupies the former Yoshida Castle grounds, where the Imperial Japanese Army established barracks for the 18th Infantry Regiment in 1885. The regiment had been formed in Nagoya the previous year. Its soldiers subsequently served in successive conflicts, including the war in China and the Pacific War. The site therefore connects a familiar city park with the longer history of military mobilization in Toyohashi.
The barracks reused the castle landscape rather than erasing it completely. Earthworks and moats defined parts of the military compound, while the arrangement of barracks, headquarters and entrances changed over time. These overlapping remains help visitors distinguish the feudal castle from the later army installation. This site is separate from the former 15th Division headquarters and officer school at today's Aichi University.
Surviving traces include gates and a sentry post, together with smaller service structures. Aichi Prefecture's survey notes uncertainty over a small building labeled as an ammunition store on an old plan: its size may instead indicate an associated oil store. It should not be assigned an unequivocal wartime function. The regiment's site monument was erected in August 1964 and represents postwar remembrance rather than an original barracks feature.
The grounds are now a public park with cultural and sporting facilities. Visitors can examine outdoor remains while walking through the park; this entry does not imply that surviving structures can be entered. The map uses the city's published representative point for Toyohashi Park, not the precise location of each gate or remnant.
