Uraga Dock (Former Uraga Dock Company Shipyard)
浦賀ドック(浦賀船渠跡)
The surviving brick dry dock of a shipyard that built Imperial Japanese Navy destroyers through 1945. The works closed in 2003; entry now depends on organized tours or designated events.
History
Uraga's former shipyard stands beside the harbour near Uraga Station. Its naval role developed through destroyer construction: the yard completed Nagatsuki and Kikuzuki in 1907, and continued building destroyers until the end of the Second World War in August 1945. It represents the contribution of commercial shipbuilders to the navy, alongside the nearby but separate Yokosuka Naval Arsenal.
The surviving brick dry dock was constructed in 1899. A dry dock allowed water to be removed so that workers could inspect and repair a vessel below its waterline. Shipbuilding on the yard's slipways and work inside the dock were related but distinct activities; the surviving dock should not be described as the construction berth of every ship associated with Uraga.
The works continued producing civilian and naval vessels after the war before closing in 2003. In 2021, the dock and surrounding land were donated to Yokosuka City. Remaining industrial buildings, brickwork and parts of the crane landscape help convey the scale of a waterfront once organized around ship construction and repair, although some structures have been dismantled.
The grounds are accessible through guided tours or designated events, rather than ordinary unrestricted entry. Tour routes and photography arrangements should follow the organizer's instructions. The map uses the city's tourism listing's approximate site marker, not an entrance or the full extent of the historical yard.
