仙台市宮城野區榴岡公園內的這棟白色木造建築，是陸軍第二師團所屬步兵第四聯隊留存下來的兵舍。它興建於明治初期，此後一直由陸軍使用到1945年8月，因此與貫穿整個第二次世界大戰時期的軍事體制有直接的關聯。這裡與位於仙台城附近的師團司令部，是不同的地點。

兵舍的建築把上下拉窗、帶有立柱的玄關門廊等西式細部，與日式的瓦屋頂結合在一起，屬於明治初年常見的擬洋風樣式。宮城縣認為它是現存兵舍建築中格外重要的一例，並於2023年指定為縣的有形文化財。乍看之下它像是公園裡的一棟洋館，實際上卻是士兵們日常起居的軍事建築。

戰後，這片營地先由美國佔領軍使用，其後成為警察學校的用地。在整建公園的過程中，大部分的兵舍都消失了。這棟留存下來的建築於1977年被遷移到現在的位置，經過復原修建之後，於1979年作為仙台市歷史民俗資料館對外開放。因此，地圖所標示的是這棟保存建築今日的位置，而不是它在戰時的確切基地位置。

資料館的展示規劃中，設有一個介紹步兵第四聯隊的專區，另有呈現當地庶民日常生活與民俗的展示。資料館對一般民眾開放參觀，依照官方的步行指引，入口位於建築面向草坪的一側。這棟原有的建築本身就是參觀的一部分，可以從外觀、樓梯與窗框等處觀察明治期兵營的構造；但今日的各個展示室是為博物館用途而整修的，不應誤認為是原封未動的戰時室內。第四聯隊所屬的第二師團曾被派往瓜達康納爾島等南方戰場，館內的展示有助於把這棟安靜的建築與那段歷史連繫起來。
