Former Fourth Infantry Regiment Barracks (Sendai City Museum of History and Folklore)
旧歩兵第四連隊兵舎(仙台市歴史民俗資料館)
A surviving wooden Army barracks in Tsutsujigaoka Park, used until August 1945 and later moved within the former military grounds. It now houses Sendai's history and folklore museum.
History
The white wooden building in Tsutsujigaoka Park is a surviving barracks of the Fourth Infantry Regiment, part of the Army's Second Division. Built in the early Meiji period, it continued in Army use until August 1945, giving it a direct connection to the military establishment that operated through the Second World War. It is a different location from the divisional headquarters near Sendai Castle.
Its architecture combines Western details, including sash windows and columned entrance porches, with a Japanese tiled roof. Miyagi Prefecture identifies it as an unusually important surviving barracks building and designated it a prefectural cultural property in 2023.
After the war the grounds served American occupation forces and later a police school. Most barracks disappeared during park development. The surviving building was moved to its present position in 1977 and restored before opening as the history and folklore museum in 1979. The map therefore marks the preserved building's present position, not its precise wartime footprint.
The museum's plan includes a Fourth Regiment corner alongside displays of local everyday life. Public museum admission is available, and the official walking directions place the entrance on the lawn side of the building. The original structure itself is part of the visit, but today's museum rooms should not be mistaken for an unchanged wartime interior.
