History

Asahihama preserves part of the concrete coastal defense network built in eastern Hokkaido near the end of the Pacific War. Taiki's tourism account dates the accelerated construction to around 1944, when the Seventh Division moved its base to Obihiro, in preparation for an American invasion. The positions were not ultimately used in battle. Their firing openings and spacing help explain the intended defense of the shoreline.

A separate surviving example was rediscovered during forestry work in September 2008 and subsequently preserved by the town. It has an eight-sided plan, two firing openings and a bent entrance passage, interpreted as protection against blast. The town describes it as 3.5 metres high, with walls reaching 1.8 metres in thickness.

The beach structures and the forest example should not be confused: the former are affected by coastal erosion, and some are thought to have fallen from the terrace above. The map marks the tourism office's representative location for the group rather than every individual structure. Visitors can observe surviving concrete, openings and their relationship to the coast; internal access is not established here. The official guide warns that vehicles can become stuck in the beach sand.
