Fuji Army Airfield Site and Reclamation Monument
富士飛行場跡(開拓記念碑)
A short-lived Army training airfield opened near the Fuji River mouth in 1944. Its grounds were reclaimed after the war; a relocated monument and the area's street pattern recall the lost airfield.
History
Fuji Army Airfield opened on 27 September 1944 near the mouth of the Fuji River and the Tagonoura coast. It supported the training network associated with Akeno's Army fighter-pilot school, rather than serving as a civilian airport. Construction required the relocation of local homes and the conversion of farmland. In the last year of the war, ordinary pilot instruction was followed by training for special-attack units associated with the Okinawa campaign.
Military flying here lasted less than a year. After Japan's defeat, the aircraft and weapons were handed over to the occupation forces and the remaining military work ended in October 1945. Residents then undertook the difficult task of restoring hardened airfield land to cultivation. A reclamation cooperative was established in 1946, and the work of rebuilding fields, roads and water channels shaped the district's regular street pattern.
There is no intact operating wartime airfield to enter today. A monument commemorating the tenth anniversary of the reclamation project records this transition from military land to agriculture. In 2020 it was moved to the southwest corner of the Fuji Minami Community Centre grounds. It is a postwar monument, not an original airfield structure, and is included here as a way to understand the former site rather than as a separate location.
The map uses the geocoded address of that community centre as an approximate representative point. The historic airfield covered a much larger area toward the river mouth and coast. Visitors can examine the outdoor monument and the surrounding district from permitted public areas; present-day houses and agricultural plots are not an open-air museum. The centre's opening arrangements apply when using its grounds and facilities.
