Former 2nd Antiaircraft Regiment Searchlight Training Building
旧陸軍高射砲第二連隊照空予習室
A surviving concrete air-defense training building in Kashiwa's Nedo district used projected aircraft images indoors and rangefinding equipment on its roof. Later converted into a fire station, it is now a registered cultural property; entry is prohibited.
History
This concrete building survives on the former 2nd Antiaircraft Regiment grounds in Nedo, north of Kita-Kashiwa Station. The regiment moved here in 1938 as the army expanded the capital's air defenses. The building is dated to about that year, although Kashiwa City notes that a document establishing its precise completion date has not been found. The regiment's main force moved to Tokyo in 1941; replacement troops remained until 1943, followed by other army units.
The structure housed specialized training rather than an aircraft hangar. Aircraft images projected inside allowed personnel to practise searchlight operation and air-defense procedures. Rangefinding exercises took place on the roof, reached by an exterior staircase. The surviving paired crane supports were used to raise heavy instruments. These features distinguish the site from the separate Kashiwa airfield to the west.
Postwar conversion altered the interior: an upper floor and vehicle shutters were added for a fire substation in 1967. The fire service moved out in 2009, and local organizations continued using upstairs rooms until 2015. National registration as a tangible cultural property followed on 6 March 2024.
The building remains in its original location amid a residential district whose streets retain parts of the former compound layout. Kashiwa City explicitly prohibits entry to the building, so a visit is limited to viewing the exterior without crossing barriers. The map uses the Agency for Cultural Affairs' published location, marked approximate; nearby relocated regimental gateposts are not the same structure.
