History

The Nakajima Aircraft Company's Musashino factory in western Tokyo — merged in November 1943 with the adjoining Tama plant to form the Musashi Plant — was Japan's largest producer of aircraft engines, manufacturing the Sakae engine that powered the famous Zero fighter. Recognized by US intelligence as the single most important aircraft production target in Japan, it was attacked repeatedly by B-29 bombers starting in November 1944. These raids were among the first precision bombing missions against the Japanese home islands.
