Okegawa Branch of the Kumagaya Army Flying School
旧熊谷陸軍飛行学校桶川分教場(桶川飛行学校平和祈念館)
The Army flying school's separate Okegawa campus preserves restored barracks and service buildings. It trained pilots before becoming a special-attack training facility in 1945 and later housing returnees.
History
This campus in Kawadaya, Okegawa, opened in June 1937 as a branch of the Kumagaya Army Flying School. It is a separate historical location from the main school in Kumagaya. Young aviation recruits and officer trainees learned flying skills here while living in the campus buildings. The branch closed as a school in February 1945, after which the facilities were used for special-attack training. Okegawa's cultural-property account records that twelve special-attack personnel were sent to Chiran in April that year.
Five buildings form the surviving complex: the barracks, guardhouse, garage, lavatory and ammunition store. They show the accommodation and supporting infrastructure behind flight training, rather than simply commemorating aircraft. The city's building description also notes the use of king-post roof trusses. Following the war, the premises were adapted as Wakamiya municipal housing for returnees and other residents, linking the military campus to the history of postwar resettlement.
The buildings were designated municipal cultural properties in 2016 and restored between 2018 and 2020. The peace memorial hall opened in August 2020. Displays in the barracks cover school life, flight training, movement to the front and the transition to peace; part of a sleeping room is recreated.
The approximate map point follows the city museum page's map link for the surviving campus. Public admission is free during opening hours. The museum normally closes on Mondays, with holiday adjustments, at month-end except Sundays, and over the New Year period. Use the museum's designated approach beside the Taroemon Bridge; this entry does not imply access to neighbouring aviation or private facilities.
