Taiwan Governor-General Higher Agricultural and Forestry School
臺灣總督府高等農林學校

The Taiwan Governor-General Higher Agricultural and Forestry School (臺灣總督府高等農林學校) was a leading institution of agricultural higher education in colonial Taiwan, established in 1919 in Taipei under the orders of the Governor-General of Taiwan. Founded as the Advanced Academy of Agronomy and Forestry with Japanese academic Fumio Abe as its first principal, the school trained agricultural specialists who managed colonial resource exploitation across Taiwan. In 1928 it was incorporated into Taihoku Imperial University as an affiliated department, then regained independence in 1943 and relocated to Taichung. During wartime, students were mobilized for food production efforts to support Japan's war campaign. After Japan's surrender in 1945, the school was reorganized as the Taiwan Provincial Taichung Agricultural Junior College, eventually evolving into National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), one of Taiwan's leading research universities.

History
The Taiwan Governor-General Higher Agricultural and Forestry School (臺灣總督府高等農林學校, Taiwan Sōtokufu Kōtō Nōrin Gakkō) was the premier institution of agricultural higher education in colonial Taiwan. Its establishment in 1919 reflected the Japanese colonial government's strategic emphasis on developing Taiwan's agricultural and forestry resources for the benefit of the empire.
The school was founded in 1919 in Taipei, with Japanese academic Fumio Abe (阿部文夫) appointed as its first principal that April. Initially named the Advanced Academy of Agronomy and Forestry (臺灣總督府農林專門學校), with departments of agriculture and forestry, it was renamed the Higher Agricultural and Forestry School (高等農林學校) in 1922 and the Taihoku Higher Agricultural and Forestry School in 1927. The curriculum was designed to produce specialists capable of modernizing Taiwan's agricultural sector and maximizing the extraction of tropical and subtropical agricultural products — including rice, sugar, camphor, and timber — that were vital to Japan's colonial economy.
In 1928, as part of the broader reorganization of colonial higher education following the establishment of Taihoku Imperial University (now National Taiwan University), the school was merged into the university as its affiliated Department of Agriculture and Forestry (附屬農林專門部). This arrangement lasted until April 1, 1943, when the school was re-established as an independent institution. On October 1, 1943, the newly independent Taiwan Governor-General Taichung Higher Agricultural and Forestry School (臺灣總督府臺中高等農林學校) relocated from Taipei to its new campus in Taichung, at the site that would become its permanent home.
During the final years of World War II, the school played a direct role in Japan's wartime mobilization. Students and faculty were pressed into service for intensified food production campaigns as Allied submarine warfare and bombing disrupted supply lines to Japan. The school's agricultural expertise was redirected toward maximizing wartime food output, and students participated in labor mobilization programs. In 1944, the institution was reorganized as the Taiwan Governor-General Taichung Agricultural and Forestry Specialized School (臺灣總督府臺中農林專門學校).
Following Japan's defeat in August 1945, the school underwent rapid transformation. A closing ceremony for the Japanese-era institution was held on November 30, 1945, and the following day it was renamed the Taiwan Provincial Taichung Agricultural Junior College (臺灣省立臺中農業專科學校). In 1946, it was upgraded to the Taiwan Provincial College of Agriculture. The institution continued to grow through the postwar decades, merging with other colleges in 1961 to form Taiwan Provincial Chung Hsing University. In 1971, it was elevated to national status as National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), which today stands as one of Taiwan's premier comprehensive research universities, maintaining strong programs in agriculture and life sciences that trace directly back to its colonial-era origins.
