History

On September 2, 1945, the formal surrender ceremony of Japan took place aboard the battleship USS Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay. Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijiro Umezu signed the Instrument of Surrender in the presence of Allied Supreme Commander General Douglas MacArthur, officially ending World War II. The location in Tokyo Bay, visible from Yokohama and Yokosuka, marks one of the most significant moments in modern history.
