Tsukuba Naval Air Group Site and Former Headquarters
筑波海軍航空隊跡(旧司令部庁舎・記念館)
A surviving naval pilot-training headquarters in Kasama, now a memorial museum. The site traces the transition from flight instruction to wartime combat and special-attack training.
History
The naval airfield at Tomobe began in 1934 as a detachment of the Kasumigaura Naval Air Group. It became the independent Tsukuba Naval Air Group in 1938. Despite its name, this site is in present-day Kasama, not Tsukuba city. Its main purpose was pilot instruction, but during the final phase of the Asia-Pacific War it also trained pilots for combat and special attacks. The museum's chronology records the formation of the Tsukuba special-attack unit in 1945 and the movement of aircraft to Kyushu for the Okinawa campaign.
The three-storey concrete headquarters was built in 1938. Kasama's cultural-property description identifies its ship-like form and surviving interior details, including parts of the second-floor command room. After the war the building served educational and hospital uses. It was opened for historical interpretation in 2013, and an adjacent exhibition building was added in 2018. The surviving headquarters and the later exhibition space are parts of one historical site.
The map uses a documented viewpoint beside the headquarters as an approximate representative point for the museum area, not the boundary of the former airfield. The headquarters and exhibition building are open on museum operating days. A separate underground command post is about 1.3 kilometres away and has limited weekend visiting sessions: visitors must first register at the museum, and adverse weather can cancel access. Follow the designated museum routes within the medical-centre grounds.
