History

Yokosuka Naval Base was one of the principal bases of the Imperial Japanese Navy, located at the entrance to Tokyo Bay. It served as a major shipyard, repair facility, and operational base. The Yokosuka Naval Arsenal built numerous warships including aircraft carriers. After Japan's surrender, it was taken over by the US Navy and remains an active US naval facility (Fleet Activities Yokosuka) to this day.
