History

The Inba pilot-training school opened in 1941 in the area now surrounding Inzai-Makinohara. Airfield development continued, and from 1944 the site took on a stronger military role as an army aviation base. The 23rd Flying Regiment operated here in the defence of the capital region against B-29 bombers and carrier aircraft. The airfield itself also suffered air raids.

Expansion involved soldiers, mobilised local labour and Korean workers. Dispersed aircraft parking and protective structures reduced exposure on the ground. The surviving open-air revetment uses earth banks to enclose a parking space, without a concrete roof. Its earthen profile is the historical structure, showing a different protective arrangement from a covered shelter.

Postwar reclamation and later development transformed the former airfield into residential districts and roads. This revetment was retained amid that development and designated a municipal historic site in 2016. It survives west of the Tsukuriya River flood-control pond, providing a physical link to the largely transformed airfield.

The approximate map point follows the actual revetment marker in the city's cultural-property map, rather than the centre of the former airfield. Nearby Higashinohara Park contains a modern sandpit inspired by the shelter's form; that feature is distinct from the wartime earthwork. Observe the remains from the surrounding routes, follow local signs and avoid climbing or trampling the preserved banks.
