A surviving concrete aircraft shelter from the Army's Kenebetsu airfield complex, built around 1942–1943. It remains on private pasture in Betsukai and may not be entered or approached across the field.
History
This concrete aircraft shelter survives in Honbetsu, Betsukai, on the former grounds of Kenebetsu No. 1 Airfield. The town dates its construction to around 1942–1943. Its purpose was to protect military aircraft from attack; the roof is domed, and shells mixed into the concrete reflect the use of locally available material.
The wider airfield complex included five fields. Construction displaced residents and drew on mobilized local labour and students, as well as Korean and Chinese workers subjected to harsh conditions. The surviving shelter therefore records both military aviation and the transformation of local farmland during the war. After surrender, destruction and removal eliminated many facilities, while the difficulty of demolishing some concrete structures helped them survive.
The structure was recognized as Betsukai historical and cultural heritage in 2021. A later municipal survey publication describes deterioration and an interior partly filled with earth, underscoring that this is a surviving wartime object, not a restored visitor installation. It stands on private pasture: the town explicitly prohibits entering the field, and its community revitalization account describes observation from a distance. The approximate map point represents the named shelter rather than the whole airfield complex; it is not permission to enter the property.
